Bankroll management is one of, if not the, most important aspects of being a profitable daily fantasy sports player, but few truly understand bankroll management or have the discipline to stick to. Bankroll management is one of the most important factors for a winning strategy in fantasy sports betting. Even prior to the start of the season, a team manager should know how many bets they are planning to make and at how much money per wager for any given game. Weekly budgets are always a must, and an inconsistent bettor is a losing one. Daily Fantasy Football Starter Guide – Part 1. Daily Fantasy Sports (also known as DFS) is blowing up, and for great reason – it is a ton of fun. I'm still a sports bettor at heart, but I love the DFS action as well.

Daily Fantasy Sports is almost what the name says – you are playing fantasy sports, but instead of the season long competitions you are playing for just a single day (or week for football). Scoring is similar to the year long fantasy leagues, but in DFS the winners are paid out daily/weekly.

The big payouts is what makes DFS exciting, as you can watch football on a Saturday and Sunday and have a chance at winning $1 Million from a $20 entry. Even if the odds of winning are like a lottery, it still makes the game really exciting!

Essential strategies for winning at daily fantasy sports

#1 – FanDuel

FanDuel has become one of the most well-known daily fantasy sports providers on the planet. The company, which was founded in 2009, was acquired in 2016 by Irish bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair. The deal made FanDuel Paddy Power Betfair's top brand in the United States for sports betting.

FanDuel offers no shortage of contests in a number of different sports, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and soccer. They are always looking to broaden their horizons, and they were the first major DFS outlet to offer WNBA contests, for example. The site is easy-to-navigate, and the mobile app is one of the most refined in the industry. FanDuel is on top of the DFS world for a reason.

#2 – FantasyDraft

FantasyDraft may not be as renowned as FanDuel in the DFS, but they are trying their best to close the gap. While offerings like contest sizes and payouts are larger over at FanDuel, FantasyDraft has been able to survive for years in a competitive market that has seen other platforms come and go over the years. FantasyDraft offers plenty of payment methods – including PayPal – and they offer contests in most major sports, as well.

The scoring systems and contest formats differ from those offered on FanDuel, so if you're looking for a unique way to play while still being able to bank big winnings, FantasyDraft is certainly a site worth checking out. As is the case with FanDuel, FantasyDraft also offers an easy-to-use mobile app, allowing you to play on the go.

Types of DFS Contests:

There are two main categories of DFS contests – Tournaments and Cash Games.

Tournaments, also referred to as GPPs (for Guaranteed Prize Pools), are the contests with a higher amount of entries and the prizes front loaded to the higher place finishes. For example 1st place will be rewarded a large % of the prize pool. In most cases the top 15-20% get paid out.

Cash Games is a poker term that has made its way over to DFS. These refer to the head-to-head contests, double up and triple up tournaments, and 50/50 contests. These are the contests where roughly 45-50% of the entries get paid out, but you only win about double your entry (or triple in the triple up). These are less risky, but provided lower upside if you have a top lineup.

The DFS rule of thumb for those who are looking to make a consistent income from Daily Fantasy Sports is to play at least 80% of your buy-ins in the cash games, which are generally more EV+. This is also known as the 80/20 DFS rule.

If you're like me, and would rather just go for the big score instead of grind out smaller profits, you can forget about that 80/20 and play in more tournaments hoping to get lucky.

We will continue to grow this DFS section of The Sports Geek. Feel free to give us feedback or suggestions on what type of content you'd like us to produce.

The big cash prize is all that most daily fantasy sports players think about. DraftKings and FanDuel push their big millionaire contests as hard as car salesmen. And as annoying as those commercials and promotions can be, we get sucked into it because of all the upside.

There really is nothing like winning big in DFS, either.

Watching your team climb the ladder late at night, hit the green and never stop is about as thrilling as it gets.

This is being in a heavyweight boxing match, kicking the game-winning field goal, getting the shot with 3 seconds on the clock kind of excitement.

No, really, it is. And if you've been there, you know.

When the money grows and you're sweating out a big win, you feel untouchable and pretty much nothing else at that moment matters. Your research paid off. Your sweet, sneaky sleeper panned out. You're a freaking genius and now you just want a ton of cash, too.

Except, that rarely happens.

How to Avoid Losing in DFS

Truth be told, if you want a long life in the DFS scene, you need to appreciate, understand and embrace 'the grind'.

The high-end online poker players of yesteryear know what that means and anyone who has been around the daily fantasy sports scene long enough to call themselves a 'pro' knows, as well.

The key to longevity in DFS isn't winning those big cash prizes. The big wins count and they surely matter. A few hundred here, a couple thousand here and heck, maybe even that rare shot at a truly massive cash prize.

But the real way to find success in DFS is to just barely succeed more than you fail. That's done via the grind and that's done by taking calculated risks or taking as few risks as possible.

Collectively, it's more about not losing than actually winning much of anything.

That might not sound sexy and the grind might not suit you, but playing (and winning) daily fantasy sports can be a ton of fun and if done right, it could even be your job. You just need to learn how to not lose first. Here are our helpful tips:

Bankroll Management

Before you get started, it's best to check any ego at the door and understand that you will lose at times and that as good of a fantasy gamer as you are, you won't always be the best.

Part of that is going in immediately with a plan to make your money stretch. This plan can adapt as the weeks, months and years go on to adjust for your success, but initially, you should put in a fairly small amount of money and risk only up to 10% of it anytime you play.

There are rough losing streaks in all kinds of gambling and sports betting and that isn't something rare in DFS, either. Specific nights and weeks can be random and overall brutal, too, so by only investing a portion of your overall account funds, you're limiting your upside and any potential negative damage.

As we touched on, the main trick to surviving in DFS and avoiding losses on a regular basis will be properly managing funds and 'living to fight another day'. This should be your core philosophy, as every slate is different and can make or break you with research or decision-making gone right or wrong.

Know Your DFS Sport

Rule number one in daily fantasy sports after bankroll management is to know what you're doing. Like any other form of betting, you're dealing with real cash and if you're not careful, you will lose it.

Maybe you don't care or this isn't a serious thing for you, but if you do care and you want to be good at it, you should know any DFS sports you compete in, front and back.

This starts with how the actual sport is played, how the DFS site you use scores points for players and any strategies for building rosters.

If you want to be great at anything, you should put a lot of time in learning other people's secrets, basic guidelines and strategies. The more data and information that can be used, the better.

Don't Be Exclusive

Once you get one sport down, you really can't stop there. Not only should you always be striving for new ways to gain edges on the competition in the sport you think you've 'mastered', but you should also try to perfect additional DFS genres.

You might love pro football and be great at daily fantasy football, but what happens to your DFS ambitions and cash flow once the NFL season ends? No matter how good you are, you only get 16 weeks of regular season action to compete and win money, so it makes sense to stretch yourself out so you can keep winning via other DFS genres, all year long.

You're going to be better at some and worse at others, but the idea here is to not put all of your eggs in one basket. The more versatile and balanced of a DFS player you become, the more profitable you can be.

It's great to dominate any one sport, but finding success across many or all is going to broaden your DFS horizon and ultimately make you a more complete and more successful player.

Essential Strategies For Winning At Daily Fantasy Sports Betting

Play Mostly Cash Games

Regardless of the DFS sport you prefer, you're going to want to stick largely to cash games. These games (H2H, 50/50, etc) give you roughly a 50% chance of winning each time out and are the bread and butter of the daily fantasy sports industry.

They're also the bread and butter of you winning more than you're losing.

Tournaments are the death to all in DFS, as they promise the thrill of a huge cash prize, but the competition in numbers is ultimately ridiculously staggering. They obviously can be greatly rewarding and fun to compete in, but if you want to keep the losses low and pile on the wins, aim for the higher percentage contest type.

If you do it right, you can pick and choose the type of head to head competitions you're competing in and also play with pool sized for 50/50 tournaments.

Whatever gives you the best edge, gauge that to the point where you're comfortable doing it on a regular basis. If it works, it can be the foundation to your daily, weekly and monthly DFS success.

Play Single Entry Tournaments

As we noted, avoiding GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool) tournaments completely isn't necessary. Of the allotted funds you're going to compete with each night, you can predetermine a set amount you wish to put into play with larger cash prizes on the line.

If you're going to do that, though, you should at least level the playing field by picking smaller contests or single entry tournaments. Smaller contests limit the amount of people you have to overcome to take down a bigger cash prize, while single entry contests only allow each person to submit one team.

Bigger GPPs allow a ton of entries per person (some up to 150!) and extra volume aids the sharks of the industry. Their first 149 teams might lose to yours, but the 150th might beat everyone. When you're in massive GPPs where every shark has 150 teams, you're greatly out-numbered in terms of team count and general DFS ability.

The real way to go is small single entry contests. You'll be competing against a few hundred or even just a few thousand people and nobody has more than one lineup in the contest. May the best man or woman win, so to speak.

This is still a great way to quickly lose money, but it cuts the chances of losing in half or even thirds, compared to the wide open GPPs a lot of people play in. If you do it right and ration your entries for these contests, you can still take high upside shots while limiting your losses.

Limit Expectations

For single entry tourneys and all tourneys in general, just limit your expectations. One of the worst aspects of losing is going into any given slate thinking you're going to win first place or just in general, come away with a ton of cash.

Instead of dreaming big, just piece together your favorite lineup for your cash games and limit your exposure to non-cash game contests. It's okay to want to win big and there is no harm in aiming high every now and again, but you should temper your expectations.

Essential Strategies For Winning At Daily Fantasy Sports Illustrated

If you're playing DFS the right way – the way we've described – this should come naturally. Sometimes it's helpful to go in not expecting to win all of the money, however.

The main reason is that even when you break even or come away with a mild profit, expecting to win big (and ultimately not) can lead to depression and even put you on tilt. Yes, tilt is real and that or DFS depression can alter your thinking for the next day's slate.

Take Breaks

This is one fantastic reason why taking breaks in daily fantasy sports is a necessity if you want to sustain a winning DFS culture.

Essential Strategies For Winning At Daily Fantasy Sports Picks

Can you win on online casinos. There are three reasons that work together that should lead you to taking DFS slates 'off':

  • Fatigue
  • Bad Slate
  • Loss/Tilt

Mental and physical fatigue can obviously impact how you feel and if you're sick, tired or just not feeling it, just take a break from DFS for the night or even a few days. Daily fantasy sports will still be there when you get back, so don't worry about 'missing out' and just recalibrate when you're ready again.

There are also often just really crummy slates. Whether it's terrible weather for MLB games, bad matchups in any DFS genre, poor player pricing or whatever the reason may be, it's okay to look at a slate and say to yourself 'nope, not playing this one'.

You always want to be holding the edge when you're putting your money on the line. If you don't love a slate or see areas to exploit salary cap pricing and ultimately the opponents you're facing, how is that beneficial to you?

There is also the case of severe losses or you mentally being on 'tilt'. Poker players and sports bettors know all about that and even if you're following our guidelines and your losses aren't so staggering, losing any amount of money or coming really close to a huge cash prize and failing can all take a toll.

Don't be afraid to step away for a second to catch your breath. It is never fun to fade an entire night of DFS action, but it actually can refresh your mind and hit the reset button on your entire approach.

Your core DFS foundation and fundamentals should never change, but slightly tweaking your approach with a fresh view on things can actually be very helpful.

Avoid Recency Bias

This idea of taking breaks actually blends into another – don't be biased. You can't only use players that have performed well or not use players because they haven't performed well.

Instead, we need to rely on data and our research and trust the numbers, as well as our gut instinct. This usually pertains to how players are performing and how they've specifically performed for us recently, but it can extend to any type of biases.

Holding biases of any kind can help you at times, but more often than not you'll be missing out on big points for really silly reasons.

Don't Chase Points

Last, but certainly not least, you never want to chase points in daily fantasy points. In the same vein of not drafting players in season-long leagues based on last year's stats, you never want to take a player just because they went off and you missed out.

Career performances typically do not come back-to-back, so for the most part, if you miss out on a guy going nuts, you missed out and that's the end of it. Paying for that player in hopes for a repeat performance is almost always met with disappointment and ultimately, a loss.

I'm sure there is more to think about that can help you avoid losing in daily fantasy sports, but the reality is there is no magic formula to only winning all the time.

This should be a great starting point and help you build a strong foundation. The rest, truly, is up to you. The amount of research you put in, what your trusted sources are, which experts you listen to, your own personal knowledge of sports and DFS and so much more is going to collectively contribute to how successful you'll be.

Foundation is key in anything, though, and particularly life in general. To be successful in DFS, you absolutely need to build from the ground up. This blog should help you do that. Hopefully, it leads to a lot of winning!
